Vivo V40 Review: A slight step forward, but not a big leap

Vivo has launched the Vivo V40, the newest member of its popular V series, in India. The phone is believed to be an upgraded version of the V30 that was launched earlier this year. The new model features an even better AMOLED display, upgraded cameras with ZEISS optics, IP68 ratings, and a bigger battery. However, the processor remains the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. Let’s find out if this phone is really the true successor to the V30.

What will you get in the box?

Vivo V40 (8GB RAM + 128GB storage, Ganga Blue color)

Clear silicone case

USB Type-C cable

80W fast charging adapter

SIM ejector tool

Quick start guide and warranty card

Design, display and build quality

The phone has a 6.78-inch curved AMOLED screen that comes with 1.5K resolution (2800×1260) and 120Hz refresh rate. Talking about brightness, it can go up to a high brightness of 1200 nits and a peak brightness of 4500 nits, making the screen clearly visible even in sunlight. The screen supports 1.07 billion colors and with HDR10+, high quality content can be enjoyed on Netflix and YouTube.

The Ganga Blue variant of the phone is quite attractive, in which the “sparkling water ripple” effect is visible. The device is just 7.58mm thin and feels light when held in hand.

How is the camera quality?

Rear camera: 50MP primary (OIS, ZEISS lens) + 50MP ultra wide

Front camera: 50MP autofocus

This time Vivo has removed the flash and given Aura Light, which is three times brighter than before. Photos come out great in daylight, and details and dynamic range are also good when HDR option is kept on. Ultra wide shots and macro photos are good, although the macro mode seems better than the main camera.

The camera gives okay results even in low light, stability is maintained due to OIS. The front camera also works well in portrait mode.

Video recording can be up to 4K (from both front and back camera), but in stabilization mode the resolution drops to 1080p.

Software and User Interface

The phone comes with Funtouch OS 14 based on Android 14. The company has promised 3 years of Android updates and 4 years of security updates. It has features like kinetic wallpapers, custom lock screen clock, and AI eraser.

The phone comes with many pre-installed third party apps like Amazon, PhonePe, Netflix etc., which can be removed but come back after factory reset.

Fingerprint and Face Unlock

The phone has an in-display fingerprint sensor which responds fast. There is also face unlock, which is considered a little less secure but works quickly.

Audio and Multimedia

The Vivo V40 has stereo speakers whose quality is satisfactory. The audio output from the headphones is also good. It does not have FM radio, but HDR playback and Widevine L1 support is available on Netflix and YouTube.

Connectivity and network support

The phone has features like dual SIM slot, 5G support (both Jio and Airtel), WiFi 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.4, GPS, USB OTG. But the lack of NFC still remains. The SAR value is also within the Indian standard, which is a good thing.

Performance and gaming

Running on Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, this phone performs smoothly in both normal use and gaming. No lag was felt in graphic intensive games. The phone has a vapor chamber cooling system, which does not cause much heating. But in this range, there are options with processors like Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 and 8s Gen 3 which give more performance.

Battery and charging

The 5500mAh battery is bigger than before and easily gives a day’s backup without stopping. Due to 80W fast charging support, the phone gets charged 50% in half an hour and 100% in about 1 hour.

Price and availability

8GB + 128GB – ₹34,999

8GB + 256GB – ₹36,999

12GB + 512GB – ₹41,999

Pre-booking of the phone will start from August 7 and sale will start from August 19 on Flipkart, vivo.com and offline stores.

What are the options available?

If you want other options in this price range, then smartphones like Honor 200, POCO F6, Realme GT 6T and OnePlus Nord 4 are also good options.

Advantages

Great 120Hz AMOLED display

Better camera and portrait mode

Good battery and fast charging

IP68 rating and stylish look

Disadvantages

Lack of NFC support

Old processor

Unnecessary pre-installed apps

If you give priority to camera, design and battery, then Vivo V40 can be a great option. But if you are looking for a phone only for performance, then there are better options available in the market.
